Founded by the Romans in 43 BC, Lyon - Lugdunum in the Antiquity - has preserved an important Roman heritage like the Amphiteatre of the Three Gauls.
Birthplace of Christianity in France, the city is overhung by the majestic Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière like the Sacré Coeur in Paris. Every year, around december 8, the city expresses gratitude toward Mary, mother of Jesus, during a festival of lights, see the pictures on top.
Lyon is also the birthplace of the cinema, invented by Auguste and Louis Lumière.
Rich of its history, Lyon has a lot of museums and monuments. It is an important place of French gastronomy as well, with a lot of awarded chiefs cook and restaurants.
